Suggested Reading Order
This list is designed for someone who has heard very little or nothing about Iranian politics. It will present the subjects in an order that allows someone to learn about the system before learning events that happened because of the system.
Why is this list in the order it is?
This list starts with the dominant religious belief in Iran, Shiite Islam. This will help a reader understand the basic ideals that most of the citizens in Iran live by and the religion the government in Iran was founded on. The second topic, the 1979 Iranian revolution, is about the events that led to the formation of the modern Iranian government. This topic assists the first page in explaining how the country was founded, as well as giving context about the Islamic Republic of Iran. The next three topic are people who played an important role in the revolution and the successive founding of the Republic. They are the people who laid the groundwork for what Iran is today. The U.S. / Iran diplomatic relations topic shows what occurred in Iran during the early days of it's democracy, which revolved a lot around the U.S. conflict with the government. It paves the way into modern Iran and the political issues the country currently faces. Mohammed Khatamini and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were two presidents during the early 2000's in Iran. The contrast in their political beliefs and the Green Movement following Ahmadinejad's election shows how divided the country was at the time and gives even more background on the modern political situation in Iran. After this section, all leaders and events are current. Once the reader has reached this point, they will have the understanding necessary to look at any remaining topics such as opinion articles and Iranian media analysis and form their own opinions on the subjects.
